All about the Annual Dinner - Keep Scolling Down

Dear Old Boys,
Welcome to the 36th Annual Dinner since our inception in 1987. Please note the new venue and start time.
Perhaps we should call it a ‘lunch’ given the new start time!
The change of venue and time has come about as a result of feedback we have received over time and the show of hands at last year’s Dinner. You will have noted a lower cost as a consequence. We did look at City Hall as an option for this event in this time slot but it was significantly more expensive than South’s.
The Guest Speaker this year will be Peter Gittens from the Year of ’74. After graduating from Newcastle Uni
he began a career in international education in 1984 culminating in the overseas School of Colombo, Sri Lanka from 1998 to 2023. He is currently a Board member of organisations in Georgia and Vietnam.
At present we have email addresses for approximately 75% of our membership which expedites the process
of forwarding information to you. However, we would like that to be as close as possible to 100% AND with
any changes in your email addresses advised as soon as possible.
As is our custom, we will be honouring those ex-students who are celebrating their 50th year since leaving the school at Waratah. So to the Old Boys of 1974, a special welcome. It is helpful to the Association if the 49 year group begin the process of rounding up their year in preparation for their 50th and let us know their choice of guest speaker, preferably with their agreement to do it!
If you know of any ex-students and teachers who would like to attend the Dinner, but did not receive our messages, please give them a photocopy of The Dinner Advice Sheet to send in, or download this information from www.nbhsoba.net.au. They can phone for details or send us an email with their subscription and dinner fee enclosed. The Dinner Advice Sheet can be used as a Membership Application Form.
THE ANNUAL DINNER IS OPEN TO FINANCIAL MEMBERS ONLY.
The cost of the dinner only package will be at $70.00 this year. There will no canapes or pre-dinner drinks. Beer, wine and juice/soft drink may be purchased from the bar. It might be easier to purchase wine before you enter the function room for lunch should you choose to do so. South’s Leagues Club is of course open till late should you wish to have an evening meal or drinks and watch the football after our event.
Please use the electronic payment option if possible. If you pay online you will still have to post in or email the completed Dinner Application form to dgubbay@bigpond.net.au. In the identity box for online payments please put your name and last year at school so that we can identify it as your payment. Please also advise any dietary requirements on your form or by email.
We have to confirm numbers 2 weeks prior to the lunch and pay for that number. If you just turn up on the day, there is no guarantee of a meal. Also, if you indicate that you are attending and then do not turn up on the day, we still have to pay for your meal so refunds will only be made in exceptional circumstances.

DINNER MENU

Entrée:
Pumpkin Arancini Balls; or
Salt and Pepper Squid.
Main:
Grain fed Beef Fillet w/ red wine & bacon jus, Pommes Gratin & seasonal vegetables; or
Marinated Barramundi Fillet w/ Lemon Hollandaise sauce, Smashed Chats &seasonal vegetables.
Dessert:
This year rather than a formal Dessert there will be platters with a variety of Mini Cakes, Slices, Profiteroles

and Macaroons plus Mixed Seasonal Fruit Platters available in the room following the main course.
Please do not forget to tell us if you have particular dietary requirements when you return your invitation. Your requirements will be met separately from the above menu.
Donations towards the Scholarship Fund, either sent with an apology, added to the dinner payment or
placed in an envelope that will be on each table at the event are always gratefully received. The money from
this fund goes to worthy students from Newcastle High, Waratah Campus of Callaghan College and Newcastle East Primary School. The President’s Report contains the names of the recipients of prizes at the Schools.
MEMBERSHIP DETAILS
Membership has decreased slightly due largely to the passing of Old Boys and is now standing at 952. We all need to encourage old boys that we know to join in order to help prolong the life and work of the association. An L after your membership number on your invitation indicates that you are a Life member and therefore fully paid up.
Please return the Dinner Advice sheet with corrections if any of your details have changed.
DECEASED MEMBERS
The Association regrets the passing of members during the year. Unfortunately the Committee does not always hear of members' deaths. It will be greatly appreciated if members inform the Secretary if they hear
of another member's passing.
LOST MEMBERS
There is no list of Lost Members again but we hope that financial members will keep an eye out for those that have slipped through the net and advise us accordingly.
